I left Kinsley, KS at 9:00am and drove 369 miles to Canon City, CO. It is pronounced Canyon City here, There were significant cross winds on the drive. About the only interesting thing to see along the way is the wind farms.
Cañon City /ˈkænjən ˈsɪti/ is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Fremont County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 16,400 at the 2010 United States Census. Cañon City straddles the easterly flowing Arkansas River and is a popular tourist destination for sightseeing, whitewater rafting, and rock climbing. The city is noted for being the location of nine state and four federal prisons and penitentiaries, and a welcoming sign says, “Corrections Capital of the World.”
In 1994, the United States Board on Geographic Names approved adding the tilde to the official name of Cañon City, a change from Canon City as the official name in its decisions of 1906 and 1975. It is one of the few U.S. cities to have an Ñ in its name.
Canon City is at about 5200 feet altitude. The RV park is about 6200 feet or so.
Arrived about 6:15pm. I am staying four nights at Mountain View RV Resort. It is a very nice park about five miles up the mountain from Canon City, The entire park is pea gravel or something similar with most sites having concrete pads. I have never seen any park that rakes their gravel sites more than here. I am paying $45 per night including tax for my site. Full hook-ups. It is an odd little site but I like it. No neighbors and there is no table at this site so I get to use the table, fire pit and chairs from the cabin next door. Apparently they only rent the cabin or the site and the table, chairs, etc are used by either.
By coming in on Thursday I beat the holiday weekend crowd so my side of the park is pretty deserted Thursday evening.
