Monday, Oct 6, 2014 – Finally, lovely sunshine and 58 degrees

Today the sun finally shined and it warmed up to 58 degrees!!  I took out about 9:30 this morning and just drove all over the rest of Door County.  I drove thru three state parks and numerous county, city and town parks.  If I saw the word park, I just turned in, as well as just driving down roads that looked interesting.

About 1:00 I stopped for lunch.  The spot I was in did not have many options so I chose Mike’s Port Pub.  From the outside it did not look like much but it actually was not bad inside.  My lunch was very good.

Here are a few of the 295 photos I took today…

While I was at this little park, I noticed these plants I thought were neat looking.  There was a woman working in the park spraying the ground.  I asked her what they were and she said they were invasive phragmites.  She says they are trying to get rid of it.

Sunday, Oct 5, 2014 – Wandering around Door County

No sun again today, high of 48 and a chilly wind most of the day.  Yesterday I drove south of Egg Harbor, today I drove north of Egg Harbor up to the north end of the island.

I stopped at a few stores.  In Fish Creek I stopped at this store that had a bunch of cute things in the yard.  It was on a corner and called the “Corner Store”…I walked in to see racks of beautiful leather coats.  The first price tag I saw was $900.  There were signs that you were to ask for assistance to “try on” the coats.  As I went on around the store I saw coats with $2,000 price tags.  I left without “trying on” anything or buying anything.

On the way back down the highway I pulled off at various roads that looked interesting.

I got back to the campground about 6:00pm.  I ate my dinner and then went to the laundry room and did two loads of laundry.

Saturday, Oct 4, 2014 – Chilly & Damp

Door County, WI has a county population of about 28,000.  It is a popular vacation destination known as “The Cape Cod of the Midwest”.  There are five state parks and twelve lighthouses.

Cherry orchards are a big deal here.  Apple orchards as well.  Artisan foods are a big deal here.  Artisan cheese, artisan bread, local dairy, locally made jams, jellies, syrup, wine, coffee and on and on.

There is a Wal-Mart, Target, McDonalds and a few other fast food chain restaurants in Sturgeon Bay at the entrance to Door County.  After you leave Sturgeon Bay there are no chain restaurants, shopping or hotels.  Shopping is pretty upscale.  Small stores stuffed with a lot of stuff on the high end of prices.  Definitely their target shoppers are yuppies.

The high today was 46 and it drizzled most of the day.  This meant all the stores were crazy busy as people could not enjoy the outdoors.  I wandered thru a dozen stores in Egg Harbor and the drove down to Sturgeon Bay and wandered thru stores there and in between.

Photos from my day..

Friday, Oct 3, 2014 – Moving on from the UP to Door County, WI

It was gently raining this morning when I left the campground.  Drove 312 miles to Egg Harbor, WI.  It was overcast and misting or gently raining pretty much the whole trip.

I left at 8:40 this morning and arrived at the campground at 5:00pm.   I am happy to be back in cell service.  When I hit the Wisconsin state line, my cell phone started going crazy with text messages.

I am staying at the Egg Harbor Campground in Egg Harbor, WI.  It is a lovely campground.  I have cell service here so my hotspot works and I am getting about five tv channels with my antenna.

Thursday, Oct 2, 2014 – Trees & Waterfalls

I drove about 125 miles today.  I moved on from Munising to Tahquamenon Falls State Park (second largest state park in Michigan).  The closest town is Paradise, MI.  Maybe the people that live there think it is paradise but there was not much there.  I did stop and have lunch in Paradise.  There are about five options for restaurants.  I chose Brown Fisheries Fish House as that was rated #1 of the options on TripAdvisor.  I had the fried whitefish and French fries or chips as they call them.  Whitefish is a popular fish they get from Lake Superior.  I am not a big fish person but it was pretty good.

Then I to the state park.  I was kind of killing time hoping the weather would clear some but no such luck.  It was dreary all day and misting.  So there are upper falls and lower falls, they are about 4 miles apart.  I went to the upper falls first.    It was a lovely 1/4 mile walk to the falls.

Pronounced tuh-qwa-meh-non (it rhymes with

phenomenon), Tahquamenon Falls State Park is one

of Michigan’s most popular attractions. The Upper

Falls is the main attraction, featuring an amber-colored

waterfall that is 50 feet tall and 200 feet wide. The

unique coloration of the water is due to the presence

of tannic acid in the river, which leeches naturally

from the trees and plants within the watershed.

The paved, ¼–mile walkway to the Upper Falls

meanders through a hardwood forest featuring sugar

maple, American beech and hemlock trees.

To get the best view of the falls you have to walk down 94 stairs and of course that means you must walk back up 94 stairs.  It was not bad.

Then I visited the lower falls…

So….it is a lovely state park with lovely fall color but it is definitely not Niagara Falls.

Here is a photo of my site…..no TV, no cell service, no wifi
